Wedding Albums: Are They Actually Worth It?
We'll start with the obvious.
We're wedding photographers.
So yes, we have some feelings about wedding albums.
But if you've already spent a small fortune on your wedding and are wondering whether you really need to spend money putting photos into a book when they're perfectly happy living on your phone…
Fair question.
So: is a wedding album actually worth it?
We think so.
But probably not for the reason you think.
Your Album Does Something Your Instagram Can't
Your favourite Instagram post might have ten photographs.
Your walls might hold another handful.
But neither tells the entire story of your wedding.
An album can.
Getting ready.
Your mom doing up your dress.
Your partner waiting at the end of the aisle.
The ceremony.
The hugs immediately afterward.
Cocktail hour.
The speeches.
The portraits.
The dance floor.
The photographs that aren't necessarily your "hero images" but somehow make the entire story make sense.
That's what an album is really for.
You Will Actually Look at It
Be honest.
How often do you open a folder of photographs from five years ago on your computer?
Exactly.
An album lives somewhere you can actually see it.
On your coffee table.
On a bookshelf.
In your living room.
And every once in a while you'll pick it up.
Then suddenly it's 45 minutes later and you're discussing whether Uncle Dave's dance moves were actually as aggressive as you remembered.
Spoiler: they were.
Your Wedding Photos Deserve Better Than a Hard Drive
Digital files are incredibly convenient.
They're also not particularly romantic.
Nobody gathers the family around the laptop and says:
"Kids, come look at IMG_5847.jpg."
There's something different about holding photographs in your hands.
Turning the pages.
Seeing two images beside each other.
Watching the story unfold.
It turns your photographs into something tangible.
Professional Album vs. Photo Book
This is where people understandably get confused.
A consumer photo book and a professional wedding album aren't quite the same thing.
Professional albums typically use higher-quality printing, thicker archival pages, more durable materials and professional colour management designed specifically for photography.
They're meant to last.
A photo book can still be a lovely option, especially for parent albums or smaller keepsakes, but your main wedding album is one of the few things from your wedding that you may still have decades from now.
How Many Photos Should Go in a Wedding Album?
You do not need to put your entire gallery into it.
Please don't.
Your album should tell the story without making someone feel like they've been trapped at your wedding for eight consecutive hours.
Start with your absolute favourites and then fill in the moments that connect them.
You want a mixture of:
The two of you.
Family.
Friends.
Details.
Candids.
Big moments.
Tiny moments.
And at least one photograph that makes absolutely no sense without context.
Those are important.
But Couldn't We Just Make One Later?
Absolutely.
You can always make an album later.
The problem is that "later" has an incredible ability to become five years from now.
Then ten.
Then you're looking for the wedding gallery password while simultaneously trying to remember which email address you had in 2026.
If you know you want an album someday, making it while your wedding is still fresh is usually much easier.
So… Is It Worth It?
If photographs are one of the things you value most from your wedding, we'd put an album pretty high on the list.
Flowers disappear.
Cake gets eaten.
Your dress gets packed away.
But an album becomes part of your home — and eventually, part of your family's history.
Which is a little sentimental for us.
